About the music –

Hill Country Mosaic was premiered on May 15th, 2012 by the Barton Middle School Wind Ensemble (Kyle, TX) for whom it was commissioned. The piece reflects the wide diversity in both the natural landscape of the Texas Hill Country area (which covers a large portion of central Texas, including the state’s capitol, Austin, which Kyle is located immediately south of) and also the diversity of the people’s heritages, religions, beliefs, customs, culture and even politics!

Great care should be taken to hold to the marked tempi as much as possible. All percussion parts must be covered, with the marimba and vibraphone being the most important. Performers should be aware of the need to stagger breaths during long sustained passages. While a wide volume range and tempo range are required, the conductor and performers alike should feel free to take liberties with nuancing the tempos of the opening section and the written dynamics throughout. I truly hope you enjoy rehearsing and performing Hill Country Mosaic!
