About the music – And Sail Away takes its title from a Robert Louis Stevenson poem entitled My Bed is a Boat. The poem describes how children often prepare for bed at night as if they are going on a long journey, packing various items they might need. This resonated deeply with me, as I was helping my two year old son get used to his bedtime routine. The piece is a lullaby dedicated to my son Thomas.
And Sail Away was selected as the winner for the 2013 ATSSB Composer's Competition which occurs semi annually. The work had its premier performance by the ATSSB All State Band at TMEA in February of 2014.
