The magnificent coral reefs of the Pacific are the inspiration for Jewel of the Sea, a Grade 1 work for band. Home to an endless variety of sealife, the coral is a vibrant, vital part of the coastal ecology. Jewel of the Sea begins with a fittingly majestic introduction, leading to an opening section incorporating all the rich colors of the band. Woodwinds and brass then alternate with the full band, so that students and audience alike will appreciate the contrasting timbres of the band instrument families. The theme is restated at the end, with a stately ending recalling the introduction.
