White Sands was written for the composer's students at Bowie Junior High School in Bowie, Texas. It was first performed in the Spring of 2001. White Sands National Monument is located in southern New Mexico between Las Cruces and Alamogordo. Large white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals comprise the area.
