Plains West Concert March was written for the 1994-95 James Pace High School Concert Band, which was directed by Mr. Owens, and received its first performance in manuscript under the direction of the composer by the Rio Grande Valley (Texas) Wind Symphony in March of 1995. The march is designed to aid you, the "young band director", in the difficult task of finding a suitable march for your concert / contest programs. Here are a few notes that I hope will help you with your performance. For maximum results, please be very insistent with your group in the area of tone production and intonation. There are several places that allow certain sections to demonstrate quality of sound to the fullest (trombones at m. 34, clarinets at m. 45, etc.). Take a light, bouncy approach to the flute countermelody at m. 61. Play the ending big and bold, but very "tonefully". Contrasts in style are clearly indicated for your convenience.
