March of the Troll King is a charming piece and an effective tool for introducing and reinforcing chromaticism with young band students. The instrument ranges are conservative and the rhythms simple so that the students are better able to focus on note names and fingerings.
There is considerable repetition throughout the piece. Helping the students to identify this will make the piece less intimidating. An understanding of key signatures, enharmonic notes and the difference between cautionary accidentals and true accidentals will also help the students to be more successful with this piece.
