March Academe is based on two musical thoughts set in a simple A-B-A form. The first and concluding thought is a free adaptation of an organ prelude, used in church services, by a little known composer of liturgical music, Peter Piel (1835-1904). The second thought is the familiar melody from the Finale to Symphony # 1 by Johannes Brahms.

While the harmonies of both works are adhered to, rhythmic patterns are altered to enhance the style of a processional.

The march is designed to be performed at academic rites, awards ceremonies, ecclesiastical events, etc. It may be played by bands with instrumentations ranging from small and basic to large and complete. The tempo is that of a processional and may be varied to suit a specific occasion.
