Fantasy on a Spiritual is based on the spiritual melody "Lord I Want to Be a Christian". This setting for band evolved over a period of several years. The melody should always be clearly heard, and accompanying parts should not overwhelm the melody. Allegro tempos should be bright, but not frantic; slower tempos should be choralelike, but not sluggish. Please keep in mind the melody was originally meant to be sung, and there should be a singing quality to the performance.
