A Brief Celebration was an outgrowth of a very fine high school theory class which I taught. I wanted students to understand the use of a small amount of thematic material, expanded - in this case a tonic 6/4 chord. The more I experimented, the more the piece fell into place. As my eldest daughter (a Suzuki violin teacher for nine years) was a member of the class, and as my younger daughter was a fine flautist, I felt it appropriate to express my feelings about the joy they bring to my life - thus the title.
