A Spiritual Overture is an original work for band in overture form based on two beautiful and distinctive African-American Spiritual melodies. The first spiritual melody is the tune "McKee," used for the hymn "In Christ There is No East or West"; the second melody is "Let Us Break Bread Together." The "Allegro" tempos should be bright, but not frantic; the "Andante" tempos are chorale-like, but not sluggish (the half-note in the "Allegro" is roughly equal to the quarter-note in the "Andante"). The melodies should predominate throughout the performance of this overture.
