Romanza Semplice was commissioned by and dedicated to the Association of Texas Small School Bands. The first performance was by the A.T.S.S.B. All-State Band in February, 1997, but the deeper purpose of the commission is to provide bands in smaller schools a new pieces of band literature. This composition is intended to be melodic and expressive, almost vocal in nature. The two unifying features of the piece are the interval of a sixth and a pattern of three step-wise notes. Both of these elements are derived from the opening of the first phrase and are developed throughout the piece.
