Fantasia on the Doxology is an expression of the glory of God. In the Roman liturgy, it is the name of two important texts, the Lesser Doxology: "Gloria patri (etfilio et spiritui sancto, sicuterat in principio, et nunc et semper et in saeculum saeculorum. Amen)"; and the Greater Doxology: "Gloria in excelsis deo (et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis," etc.). The Greater Doxology is the Gloria if the Mass, while the Lesser Doxology is a part of all the Introits. In the Anglican rites, doxology usually means the metrical verse "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," which is widely sung to the Old Hundreth tune. It is this melody that is used as the basis for this Fantasia by Forsblad.
