Essay was commissioned by the Bowling Green State University Band Alumni to commemorate Mark S. Kelly for 25 years of service as BGSU Director of Bands. An essay may be defined as a short interpretive composition dealing with its subject from a personal point of view. This music is composed from the heart for a man whose musical and personal values come from our country's heartland. The music provides a musical impression of Professor Kelly's life and contributions to our art and teaching profession. The musical message contains both reflective and exuberant lyricism, directness of expression, and energy. A highly romantic and virtuosic work.
