Composer of Fluttering Leaves is Barbara Lambrecht of El Paso Texas. Barbara’s teaching career has spanned almost five decades. She has taught band and orchestra at all levels, from elementary to university, and has just recently semi-retired from her most recent position at New Mexico State University.
She has served as conductor of the Fort Worth Junior Youth Orchestra as well as wind coach for that organization. Barbara also mentors young teachers in the El Paso area where she has recently started the El Paso chapter of YES (Young Educator Seminars). Appropriately named SI, (Sharing Information) YES/SI assists young teachers in transitioning from university study to band and orchestra directing.
Mrs. Lambrecht has performed as principal flute in the following Texas orchestras: Midland-Odessa Symphony, Wichita Falls Symphony, Lubbock Symphony, and as flutist in Mid-Cities Woodwind Quintet, Orchestra de UAJC (Juarez, Mexico), and Roswell (New Mexico) Symphony Orchestra.
She studied conducting with former conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Anshel Brusilow , Paul Ellsworth, and Jim Sudduth. She has conducted in Chicago at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, in Moscow’s Tschaikowsky Hall, and in the majority of the fifty United States.
In addition to writing for orchestra, Barbara also writes and arranges music for band and her husband’s brass quintet, El Paso Brass. She has authored articles for and served as Contributing Editor for The Instrumentalist.
Honored numerous times by her colleagues, Mrs. Lambrecht received Texas Tech University’s Distinguished Music Educator Award, Tau Beta Sigma's national Outstanding Service to Music Award, the Texas Chamber of Commerce Cultural Award, has been voted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame, received the National Band Association Achievement Award, Texas Music Educators Association Achievement Award, and twice had her "day" proclaimed by the city council. She was chosen as one of the 2000 Outstanding Musicians of the 20th Century, and was named to Who's Who of American Women.
Barbara is married to Richard Lambrecht, horn professor at the University of Texas at El Paso. She teaches flute lessons, mentors several music programs in the desert southwest, serves as the Artistic Director of the Edge of Texas Concert Band and loves to walk. She celebrated her 70th birthday by walking 70 miles on the Katy Trail in Missouri.
